Facebook Hires A Head Of Chip Development From Google

Facebook Hires A Head Of Chip Development From Google

Facebook Inc. has sent another signal that it's serious about building its own semiconductors, joining Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.'s Google, and Amazon.com Inc. in trying to make its own custom chips.

The social-networking giant this month hired Shahriar Rabii to be a vice president and its head of silicon. Rabii previously worked at Google, where he helped lead the team in charge of building chips for the company's devices, including the Pixel smartphone's custom Visual Core chip, according to his LinkedIn profile. He'll work under Andrew Bosworth, the company's head of virtual reality and augmented reality, according to people familiar with the matter.

Spokesmen for Facebook and Google declined to comment on Rabii's move.

Facebook started forming a team to design chips earlier this year, Bloomberg News reported in April. The Menlo Park, California-based company is working on semiconductors, which can be useful for a variety of different efforts, including to process information for its vast data centers and its artificial intelligence work.

Google has been developing more chips for its future devices. Later this year, the Mountain View, California-based search giant plans to release new Pixel phones with upgraded cameras and an edge-to-edge screen on the new larger model, Bloomberg News reported in May.

Facebook and Google's moves are part of a trend in which technology companies are seeking to supply themselves with semiconductors and lower their dependence on chipmakers such as Intel Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. Apple has been shipping its own custom main processors in iPads and iPhones since 2010, and has created an array of custom chips for controlling Bluetooth, taking pictures, and conducing machine learning tasks. By 2020, the iPhone maker hopes to start shipping Macs with its own main processors.

Facebook, through its Oculus virtual reality division and Building 8 hardware divisions, is working on several future devices. Earlier this year, the company launched the Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset with a Qualcomm smartphone chip. Facebook is also working on its first branded hardware: a series of smart speakers with large touch screens that can also be used for video chats.

Future generations of those devices could be improved by custom processors. With its own chips, Facebook also would gain finer control over product development and could better tie together its software and hardware.

Custom chips may also improve the company's efforts in artificial intelligence. Facebook has been working to use AI to better understand the nature of content people post on social media, so that it can quickly take down hate speech, fake accounts and live videos of violence. But so far, even human moderators are having trouble judging content consistently.

100 Thieves' NICKMERCS Has an Interesting Idea for the Kill Count Indicator in Fortnite - "Nobody is Saying No!"

100 Thieves' NICKMERCS Has an Interesting Idea for the Kill Count Indicator in Fortnite -

100 Thieves content creator Nick 'NICKMERCS' Kolcheff has presented an idea for the kill count indicator in Fortnite.

Playing the game live on his Twitch channel as usual, the popular streamer proposed that Epic Games should add an option that allows players to see their teammates' kills counters on the main HUD, should they want to do so.

When playing Duos or Squads, the number of kills that a player's teammates have collected can not be viewed on the HUD, but instead can only be seen by visiting the menu.

With the way third-party Fortnite tournaments and competitive modes are currently set up, getting and keeping track of eliminations is crucial, so the inability to see party members' kill counts quickly can be annoying and disadvantageous.

The former Gears of War pro player believes that not only would the idea prove to be successful, but it also almost seems like a no-brainer.

"I'm calling Epic [Games], I'm going to call them. Listen, I do not really know what I'm talking about, but I know a couple things about a couple things. And if you're sitting down at a big ass table full of people, if you ask them 'Hey, do you think putting your kill count by your name over there on the far right side of that bar, and having it as an option in the settings to toggle on and off, just in case, is a bad idea?' Nobody is saying no, everybody is saying yes. 'Good idea Mercs', and I'll say 'thank you, family.'"

2019 Genesis G70 first drive review: A worthy sport sedan challenger

2019 Genesis G70 first drive review: A worthy sport sedan challenger

When it comes to small, sporty luxury sedans, your mind immediately goes to Germany. After all, the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class have dominated the segment for years, though challengers from America (Cadillac CTS), Italy (Alfa Romeo Giulia) and Japan (Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS) have certainly put up a good fight. Genesis, the Hyundai spin-off from South Korea, is now prepared to join that battle.

The G70 is handsome, with a more aggressive design than Genesis' G80 and G90 sedans. I like the prominent crest grille, flowing character lines sprinkled along the body, tasteful slathering of chrome trim and available 19-inch wheels (18s are standard). Overall, the design exercises restraint and doesn't wear any over-the-top styling elements like Lexus' spindle grille. The resulting look is clean and sophisticated.

Apple Says Third-Generation Keyboards Exclusive to 2018 MacBook Pro

Apple Says Third-Generation Keyboards Exclusive to 2018 MacBook Pro

Last month, Apple initiated a Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro, after determining that a "small percentage" of the keyboards in 2015-2017 MacBook and 2016-2017 MacBook Pro models may experience keys that feel "sticky," repeat, or do not respond in a consistent manner.

Apple did not identify a cause for the issues, which they call "behaviors," but they're believed to be caused by dust and other particulates becoming stuck in the butterfly switch mechanism underneath keycaps.

Apple has been servicing affected keyboards free of charge, with the process involving the replacement of one or more keys, or the whole keyboard. For the MacBook Pro, the replacements are second-generation keyboards -- often the 2017 variant with slightly different markings on the Control and Option keys.

Then, last week, Apple surprised us with new 2018 MacBook Pro models that feature an "improved third-generation keyboard for quieter typing." These models are not eligible, at least not now, for Apple's service program.

Apple hasn't directly acknowledged whether the quieter, third-generation keyboards dually address the keyboard issues, but iFixit discovered the 2018 MacBook Pro has a thin, silicone barrier underneath each key, which they believe are intended to prevent the dust and crumbs from getting stuck.

PC shipments just rose, thanks to Windows 10News of the sale rise came from analyst firms IDC and Gartner who've both hit F9 on their spreadsheets recording Q2 shipments and found a positive number. Gartner found 62.1 million PC shipments, up a 1.4 per cent compared to Q2 2017. IDC counted 62.3 million PCs exiting factories, which us 2.7 per cent. Both firms credited the business market and Windows 10 for the bounce – it appears that businesses are finally making the jump to Microsoft's latest and buying new PCs to make it happen. IDC also opined that Q2 2017 sales were impacted by supply chain problems, so this year it's just been possible to build more machines.
