These are among the largest black holes ever found, with a combined mass 15 billion times that of the sun. New research from Stanford University, published June 27 in Astrophysical Journal, has used long-term observation to show that one of the black holes seems to be orbiting around the other.

Strange 'sea pickles' keep washing ashore along the Pacific Coast

There are strange sea creatures known as sea pickles invading the Pacific Northwest. These gelatinous and somewhat translucent organisms, called pyrosomes, have been seen congregating, sometimes by the thousands, close to shore from Northern California up to southeast Alaska clogging fishing nets and washing up on beaches, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Experts say that this year, the critters are appearing in very high numbers outside the normal range of the species.

Widely Used Pesticide Is a Buzzkill for Honeybees

Honeybee stings ache for a good reason: This species knows how to brawl. But as it turns out, these black-and-yellow pollinators are quite vulnerable themselvesespecially to neonicotinoids, a pesticide commonly used to ward off crop-munching pests. Two new studies, published this week in Science, address this question by studying large populations of bees in multiple locations for months on end. The results add substantial weight to the claim that neonicotinoids damage bee populations.

Even Steve Jobs didn't understand what the iPhone truly was

The phone is dead. The iPhone killed it. Its hard to say when exactly the inflection point came. Was there was a single point in time that the devices in our pockets became computers first and phones as a distant second? Was it the original iPhone, released 10 years ago today? Perhaps it was the iPhone 3G, which added faster internet, or the iPhone 5, which supported LTE. Or maybe it was iPhone OS 2, which opened up the App Store for developers to create their own communication platforms outside of SMS and voice calls.

Comparison: Jeep Compass vs Hyundai Tucson vs Tata Hexa

The Compass certainly isnt the type of SUV youd expect a hardcore American company like Jeep to make. Its a bit small for that, dont you think? But while that might not work in markets like the US, it might just sell like hot cakes in developing markets like India. And these are exactly the type of markets that the Compass is designed for. In India, we love SUVs to be premium and affordable at the same time without compromising on practicality. Jeep hopes to check all those boxes with the Compass, and that too with an estimated ex-showroom price of Rs 1-20 lakh. That puts it right in between a premium SUV like the Hyundai Tucson and a practical one like the Hexa. So does the Compass offer the best of both worlds? We find out.

What It's Like to Use an Original Macintosh in 2017

Im a reporter first, and a writer second, which means I often find myself writing in odd places. Not just geographically unusual, though theres that, too. I write everywhere, with whatever technology is at hand. Most of the time, Im typing away in a plain text editor on my laptop. But I still write first drafts in reporters notebooks, and in the Notes section of my iPhone, and on scraps of paper when necessary.

Internet trends report highlights India's mobile obsession, Reliance Jio disruption

The volume of wireless broadband data consumed by Indians has risen sharply, from less than 200 million GB a month in June 2016, to around 1.3 billion GB a month in March 2017, according to the Internet Trends Report 2017 from storied Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers (KPCB). The growth indicates the disruptive effect of Reliance Jio on the Indian Internet and telecom market. Data prices per GB have fallen from around $3.5 to $1.8 in the same period, according to the report that was released on Wednesday in the US. Reliance Jio itself charges around $0.17, the report said, although most consumers probably pay less. The report highlights the growing dominance of mobile as the medium of choice in India which, according to it, has 355 million Internet users (June 2016) and 277 million broadband users (March 2017). Only China with around 700 million Internet users has more. Inter estingly, 72% of Internet users in India are less than 35 years of age. 80% of all web traffic in India emanates from the mobile, a proportion that is the second highest in the world, after Nigeria. Indians also spend 28 hours a week on the mobile, as compared to 4 hours on TV and 2 hours reading print publications and books. Of the time spent on the mobile, 45% is on entertainment, 34% on search, social media and messaging, and 4% on shopping. Android is the king of mobile operating systems in India, and the country has the highest usage of Android phones (by time spent, and the data doesnt include China) and sees the most number of downloads from the Google Play Store (again, the data doesnt include China). Chinese mobile phone makers currently dominate Indias smartphone market and account for over 50% of all smartphones sold; other global sellers account for around 35%. The report also highlights one of the big challenges to the mobile ecosystem in India - cost. While prices of s martphones are down, a typical one still costs around 13% of per capita GDP. That puts it out of reach of many Indians. India fares better on the data front, with the annualized cost of 1 GB of data a month working out to less than 2% of per capita GDP. KPCBs Internet Trends Report is published every year and is considered one of the most authoritative reports on the Internet economy and ecosystem around the world. It is authored by Mary Meeker, a partner at the firm who was once described by Fortune magazine as the best at spotting big-picture trends before they become big or, even, trends. Meeker was previously an analyst at Morgan Stanley which she left in 2010. (Published in arrangement with Live Mint)
